“Would you give up, lay down [or out] your life, or the life of a loved one… for me, even me, especially me?”
I can’t count the number of conversations I have had recently with others that have involved this question…
“Would you do it… go through all that you have gone through [the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a marriage, or separation from your children; unemployment; a change in wealth, health, and status; or public humiliation]… that others [perhaps even an unnamed person, a stranger, or not a ‘good man’]… by your sacrifice or testimony, may come to KNOW HIM?”
It is my heart-felt desire, that I respond to this question with “Lord… I pray it so!”
I know that I am surrounded by this, my all too familiar flesh, but I pray… “Lord, more [“all”] of You and less [“none”] of me. God how can You be with me, inside me, and yet I carry on like You’re not? How can this be? I know that I love You and that You love me [& not in that order], and yet I fall down on a regular basis. So I think… how do the ones who don’t know You Lord, survive or carry on when…
… a loved one dies, a marriage fails, children are taken, a job is lost, life bottoms out, or there is no more room in the Inn?”
HE answers me with… “Don’t tell them julie, show them!”
“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13]
Romans 5:6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
So now I ask you…
…”Could you find it in your heart to give up, lay out or lay down, your life… for me, even me, especially me [or perhaps for ‘the good man’]?
And Jesus said…
John 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This I command you, that you love one another.
Matthew 5: 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons [and daughters] of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles [unbelievers] do the same? 48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Would you… for Me?
